Asian EFL Journal

About us

An independent research platform for evidence-led thinking on society, technology and the economy.

Who we are

Asian EFL Journal (AEJ) is an independent research and publishing platform based in London. We exist to make rigorous thinking on the big social, technological and economic questions of our time easier to find, easier to read and easier to use.

Our readers include students and academics, policy professionals, journalists, business leaders and engaged members of the public. What they share is an appetite for analysis that is grounded in evidence rather than opinion alone — and that is written clearly enough to act on.

Our motto, Research · Insights · Perspectives, describes the three kinds of work we publish: original papers and white papers; concise briefings that distil what the evidence says; and considered commentary from contributors across disciplines.

What we cover

Our coverage is organised around three connected areas of inquiry:

  • Society — education, work and skills, migration, public health, inequality, communities and the institutions that hold them together.
  • Technology — artificial intelligence, data and digital infrastructure, cyber security, online platforms and the regulation of emerging technologies.
  • Economy — productivity and growth, trade and supply chains, financial markets, public finances and the economics of the green transition.

Although we are UK-based and much of our work speaks directly to British policy debates, we pay particular attention to the relationship between the UK, Europe and the economies of Asia, where many of the defining shifts of this century are taking place.

How we work

Each publication begins with a clear question. Our editors work with contributors to define the scope of a piece, identify the strongest available evidence and present findings in a way that is honest about uncertainty. We favour primary sources — official statistics, peer-reviewed research, regulatory filings and original data — and we link to them wherever we can so that readers can check our work.

We publish in several formats: long-form research papers and white papers, shorter analytical briefings, data explainers and opinion pieces. Opinion is always labelled as such.

Editorial standards

We hold ourselves to a set of simple commitments:

  • Independence. Editorial decisions are made by our editors alone. We do not accept payment to publish, alter or withdraw content.
  • Accuracy. Facts, figures and quotations are checked against their sources before publication.
  • Transparency. We cite our sources, explain our methods and disclose relevant interests of our contributors.
  • Fairness. We represent competing arguments accurately and avoid misleading framing.
  • Corrections. If we get something wrong, we put it right promptly and note the correction on the page. Please report suspected errors to editorial@asian-efljournal.com.

Content published on Asian EFL Journal is for general information and research purposes. It does not constitute professional, legal, financial or investment advice. Please see our Terms & Conditions for more detail.

Writing for us

We welcome proposals from researchers, practitioners and doctoral students whose work speaks to our three areas of focus. A good pitch sets out the question you want to answer, the evidence you will draw on and why the topic matters now, in no more than 300 words. Send proposals to the editorial office using the details below; we aim to respond to every pitch within ten working days.
